What Dog Treats are Safe?

Just because a particular brand or type of dog treat is sold at the local pet store doesn't necessarily mean that it's safe for your furry four-legged companion. There have been dozens of pet treat recalls in recent years. Earlier this year, for instance, Barnsdale Farms, HoundsTooth, Mac's Choice, Loving Pets and Whole Hearted Dog dog treats were recalled for salmonella contamination. Salmonella bacteria can cause potentially deadly infections in dogs and should be avoided at all costs. Thankfully, there are plenty of safe dog treats on the market.

Homemade Dog Treats

Some owners prefer to make their own dog treats. This allows for unlimited freedom over the ingredients, meaning you can add the foods your dog loves and leave out the ones he hates. A simple recipe that most dogs enjoy involves biscuits made of peanut butter, pumpkin, eggs and oil. You mix the ingredients together, roll it into biscuit shapes, and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

You can also give your dog vegetables and fruits as treats. However, you'll need to choose the right type to ensure it doesn't cause digestive distress or other problems. Some of the best fruits and vegetables for dog treats include carrots, celery, apples, banana, cucumbers, watermelon and strawberry. You can even add a small amount of peanut butter to make them more palatable. As with any treat, though, you should supervise your dog at all times while he's enjoying it.

Pre-Made Dog Treats

Alternatively, you can buy pre-made dog treats. When buying dog treats from the store, check to make sure there it's a recall issued for the product. Most pet stores do a pretty good job at pulling products shortly after a recall is issued. Some, however, may remain on the shelves. To learn more about which dog treats have been recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), check out the official FDA website here.

Of course, you can rest assured knowing that all dog treats sold at Dog Treat House are safe and non-toxic. Most of the dog treats that have been recalled are made overseas. Dog Treat House, however, produces all of its products here in the Unites States at a USDA-approved facility. Some of Dog Treat House's top-selling products include jerky treats, pig ears, pork hides and snout chews, all of which are made using the highest quality ingredients.
